“A Sunday well spent brings a week of content” is a popular saying, but for many people, it’s not always the case. Instead, they experience what is commonly known as the “Sunday scaries”. According to a LinkedIn survey, 80% of respondents feel anxious and worried about the upcoming week on Sunday evenings. The dread sets in around 5 pm, as mentioned in a Guardian article.
If you find yourself overwhelmed by thoughts of insufficient sleep, a daunting to-do list, and unfinished tasks, here are five steps to help you overcome the Sunday scaries and set yourself up for a positive and productive week:
Start off the week with a calm and clear idea of what you want to achieve. Instead of viewing it as a chore, use words like “my aim,” “my goal,” “I will,” or “I want to” when setting your intention. This personal commitment will inspire and motivate you throughout the week.
Avoid going into the week blindly by taking some time to assess what lies ahead. Instead of fretting, break down tasks into manageable chunks and schedule your work commitments, life commitments, and even some fun activities. Ensure that you haven’t overbooked yourself, as this will make the week feel more overwhelming.
Combat the Sunday scaries with a treat for yourself. Whether it’s a warm bath, self-massage, face mask or movie night, make self-care a regular part of your Sunday routine. By doing this, you’ll change your association with Sundays and enter the week feeling refreshed and rejuvenated.
The Sunday scaries have a way of stealing the last few hours of your weekend with worries about the week ahead. Practice mini meditations on Sundays to work through your anxious thoughts and stay in the present moment. Remember, the weekend isn’t over yet!
