Iodine is an essential nutrient you have to get in your diet. The primary sources are white fish and dairy, with seaweed being the only natural and good plant based source of this essential nutrient.
Without sufficient iodine, your thyroid may not work as it should, as iodine is required in the production of thyroid hormones which have many impacts on your health and wellness. A diet insufficient in iodine can result in numerous health conditions, including an underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism), with symptoms including weight gain/difficulty losing weight, tiredness, sensitivity to cold, depression, brittle hair and nails, dry skin and more (see the NHS website here for more info).
One of the main benefits of a natural source of iodine like seaweed is the fact it can be released into the body more slowly, and has longer retention compared to artificial sources such as potassium iodide for example. This was demonstrated in an independent research trial which demonstrated that the artificial iodine was excreted more quickly than that from our seaweed. There are over 10,000 different types of seaweed, and we stick to just the one, knowing the iodine level of each batch and ensuring sustainable harvesting. The seaweed is carefully produced into a powder using proprietary technologies, and every batch is tested to for other aspects of nutrition and safety, along with unique traceability and DNA Authentication so you know exactly what it is you are getting
Vitamin B complex is the term used when all eight B-vitamins are present. They can be found in foods such as eggs, milk and fish – therefore, those following a more plant-based diet may find it difficult to consume all of the B-vitamins. The B-vitamins play a vital role in maintaining good health and wellbeing and have a direct impact on energy levels, brain function and cell metabolism. These benefits can be particularly important during the menopause, as Vitamin B complex is essential for optimal physiological and neurological function. Consuming all eight B-vitamins can enhance energy levels, mood and memory, as well as boosting skin and hair health.
Vitamin C is especially abundant in citrus fruits and is vital for protecting your cells and keeping them healthy. As your body cannot make or store Vitamin C, you need to ensure you are consuming a source of it every day. The benefits of Vitamin C can be particularly helpful when it comes to easing symptoms of the menopause, as it supports energy-yielding metabolism and plays a major role in keeping cartilage and bones strong. Vitamin C also has a role in synthesising the hormones that help to regulate your mood and ability to concentrate, and deficiency can worsen feelings of tiredness and fatigue. If all these benefits aren’t enough, it also helps to produce collagen, which helps keep skin looking healthy and youthful!
Vitamin D is obtained from two sources: diet and from the action of sunlight on your skin. An abundance of sunlight means you will get much of what is needed. However, you do also need sources from your diet. This is especially the case during winter months, if you are inside a lot of the time, have darker skin, and as you age due to a decline in your ability to produce vitamin D. The organic and plant-based source used in Doctor Seaweed’s Weed & wonderful Menopause+ supplements is extracted from lichens, which are an amazing symbiotic relationship between fungi and algae or cyanobacteria. The form extracted is vitamin D3, which is more commonly found from animal sources. Research shows that D3 can be more effective than D2 (normally found in plants) at being absorbed by the body.
Red clover is a flowering plant from the legume family, which has traditional uses in the treatment of asthma and whooping cough. However, more recently, red clover has been used to ease menopause symptoms such as hot flushes and night sweats. This is because it contains a type of naturally occurring plant estrogen (phytoestrogen) known as isoflavones. These isoflavones can bind with estrogen receptors within a women’s body and so may be able to mimic the effects of natural estrogen. As well as relieving hot flushes and night sweats, there is some evidence to suggest that red clover may have other benefits for menopausal women, including improving heart health and bone density as well as improving the appearance and quality of skin and hair.

Doctor Seaweed (also known as Dr Craig Rose) is a marine biologist who is passionate about bringing all the wonderful benefits of seaweed into everyday life. Having worked with seaweed for many years, Craig is on the Management Group of the Scottish Seaweed Industry Association and is an advisor to the British Phycological Society’s Applied Algae Group. He was a PhD supervisor at Newcastle University and a guest member of staff in the School of Marine Science.

For every Greener Beauty customer order we plant one tree. This is part of our ongoing effort to lower our carbon footprint and build a better world. We work with an American Charity called Eden Reforestation who plant trees globally where they are most needed. They hire, train and employ local people at a fair wage who then plant trees native to their land and protect the seedlings and eventually the forests. As a result of their careful nurturing they have an 80% seedling survival rate. This gives the local people a consistent income enabling them to provide for their families, and as the reforestation effort goes on, healthy forests emerge and the negative effects of deforestation disappear. Since Eden Reforestation began over 250 million trees have been planted around the world in Ethiopia, Madagascar, Nepal, Haiti, Indonesia, Mozambique.
