How to Make Your Own Natural Vegan Cleaning Products!

I have been making my own cleaning products for years now. Initially the reason was a mix of allergies and having sneezing fits after using heavily artificially perfumed products. I know many other people have the same issues as well as irritated skin, worsening asthma symptoms and irritation of their eyes!

If you go into any supermarket and pick up most bottles of toilet bleach they have a picture of a dead fish on the back and the warning that the product is toxic to marine life. It’s easy to imagine that most things that are put down the toilet might end up in the sea at some point! I would literally hate to do anything to harm marine life. This was just another reason for me to start making my own products. The  other benefits are that I know exactly what is in the product, I know there has been no animal testing, which is still far too common in household products, and I get to reduce my plastic waste too!

If you don’t have the time or the inclination to make your own products Dr Bronner’s Castile soap can be used for a variety of purposes from cleaning floors to cleaning the bathroom. Have a look at the ‘How to use’ tab on any of the listings for instructions and how to make up the mixes for different uses.

But if you do want to give making your own products a try here are my top three go to recipes!

GENERAL CLEANER FOR KITCHEN AND BATHROOM

This mix cleans bathroom and kitchen surfaces perfectly so that they sparkle!

1:1 white vinegar and water (I normally make enough to fill the bottle I have to hand)

10+ drops of essential oil

After mixing the vinegar and water in your chosen bottle add essential oil to create your desired fragrance.

Personally I love citrus and always find that it smells so fresh, so I mix up my own blend often featuring lemon, lime, orange and sometimes even mint!

TOILET CLEANER

This cleaner works well even on the most stubborn of limescale. Pour around the toilet rim and leave it to soak for a while before scrubbing. The tea tree and lavender work as anti bacterial while also giving a lovely fragrance.

¾ cup bicarbonate of soda

¾ cup white vinegar

10 drops of tea tree oil

10 drops of lavender essential oil

WINDOW AND GLASS CLEANER

This window and glass cleaner cleans effortlessly without leaving any streaks.

¼ cup of white vinegar

1 tbsp of corn flour

2 cups of warm water

You can add ingredients like the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon or orange to any recipe, as these both have amazing cleaning power, but this will impact the shelf life of your cleaning products. Personally I don’t want to have to make products up every time I want to clean so I make up batches with essential oils.
