How to Make Your Own Natural Vegan Cleaning Products!

Its Spring Clean time! Who else uses these wet weekends to have a good spring clean.

I have been making my own cleaning products for years now. Initially the reason was a mix of allergies and having sneezing fits after using heavily artificially perfumed products. I know many other people have the same issues as well as irritated skin, worsening asthma symptoms and irritation of their eyes!

If you go into any supermarket and pick up most bottles of toilet bleach they have a picture of a dead fish on the back and the warning that the product is toxic to marine life. It’s easy to imagine that most things that are put down the toilet might end up in the sea at some point! I would literally hate to do anything to harm marine life. This was just another reason for me to start making my own products. The  other benefits are that I know exactly what is in the product, I know there has been no animal testing, which is still far too common in household products, and I get to reduce my plastic waste too!

If you don’t have the time or the inclination to make your own products Dr Bronner’s Castile soap can be used for a variety of purposes from cleaning floors to cleaning the bathroom. Have a look at the ‘How to use’ tab on any of the listings for instructions and how to make up the mixes for different uses.

But if you do want to give making your own products a try here are my top three go to recipes!

GENERAL CLEANER FOR KITCHEN AND BATHROOM

This mix cleans bathroom and kitchen surfaces perfectly so that they sparkle!

1:1 white vinegar and water (I normally make enough to fill the bottle I have to hand)

10+ drops of essential oil

After mixing the vinegar and water in your chosen bottle add essential oil to create your desired fragrance.

Personally I love citrus and always find that it smells so fresh, so I mix up my own blend often featuring lemon, lime, orange and sometimes even mint!

Alternatively you can make a great all-purpose spray by adding 10 drops of Tea Tree essential oil to 250mls of white vinegar and 250mls water in a spray bottle. Apply to kitchen countertops, bathroom sinks or tiled floors.

TOILET CLEANER

This cleaner works well even on the most stubborn of limescale. Pour around the toilet rim and leave it to soak for a while before scrubbing. The tea tree and lavender work as anti bacterial while also giving a lovely fragrance.

¾ cup bicarbonate of soda

¾ cup white vinegar

10 drops of tea tree oil

10 drops of lavender essential oil

ANTI-BACTERIAL FLOOR CLEANER

Fill a bucket with hot water and add 15-20 drops of Eucalyptus oil which will work as an anti-bacterial and leave your floors super clean and smelling fresh.

BIN REFRESH

For an affective bin refresher, remove the bin bag and sprinkle two drops of Eucalyptus oil in the bottom of the bin. Once it’s dry, replace the bag and let this odour-eater get to work! Use 1 drop of Eucalyptus and 1 drop of Lemon to soften the aroma if you find Eucalyptus a little harsh on its own.

WOOD POLISH

Shine up your wooden furniture with Orange essential oil and enjoy the zesty scent that freshens up the entire room.

Add 10 drops of Orange essential oil to 100ml of blending oil, such as Sweet Almond Oil, stir them together, dip a polishing cloth in and wipe over the furniture. Using a separate soft cloth, buff it up and see it shine.

WINDOW AND GLASS CLEANER

This window and glass cleaner cleans effortlessly without leaving any streaks.

¼ cup of white vinegar

1 tbsp of corn flour

2 cups of warm water

AIR FRESHENER

Remove unwanted aromas in the air and give rooms a sunny, happy and lively vibe with a blend of citrus oils. Simply add 20 drops of your chosen essential oils to 1 tablespoon of baking soda in a small bowl and mix thoroughly. Add the mixture to a 100 ml spray bottle and top up with tepid water. Shake bottle thoroughly before each use and spritz into the air.

ESSENTIAL OIL BLENDS

You can add ingredients like the juice of a freshly squeezed lemon or orange to any recipe, as these both have amazing cleaning power, but this will impact the shelf life of your cleaning products. Personally I don’t want to have to make products up every time I want to clean so I make up batches with essential oils.

Our favourite expert blenders Tisserand Aromatherapy are the masters of essential oil blends so I thought I would share a few of my personal favourites below:
