How to care for rosacea prone skin

Rosacea is a common skin condition that causes blushing or flushing and visible blood vessels on your face. It may also produce small, pus-filled bumps. These signs and symptoms may flare up for weeks to months and then go away for a while. It is a long-term skin condition that mainly affects the face. It’s more common in women and people with lighter skin, but symptoms can be worse in men. Treatment can help with symptoms.

With rosacea you might need to see a dermatologist to get professional advice, but a good skincare routine and knowing what to watch out for can make a big difference.

These tips have been put together with a dermatologist and they can help reduce rosacea flare ups, boost your skins overall health and make your skin feel more comfortable.

If you have rosacea we recommend trying one tip at a time and if in doubt test new skincare and makeup on your arm to see if your skin reacts.

CLEANSE YOUR FACE TWICE A DAY

Gently cleanse your face twice a day using a mild facial cleanser (not soap). Apply the cleanser using your finger tips and gently apply using a circular motion over your face. Thoroughly rinse off the cleanser using lukewarm water. Pat your face dry gently using a clean cotton towel.

MOISTURISE DAILY

Rosacea can either make your skin dry or oily, whichever skin type you have its still important to moisturise every single day. Moisturising helps to hydrate your skin by trapping water in your skin. This in turn can reduce irritation and make your skin feel less inflamed and more comfortable.

USE AN SPF EVERY DAY (EVEN IN WINTER)

The sun sadly can make rosacea even worse and is one of the most frequent causes of flare ups.

To reduce these sun caused flare ups apply a sunscreen to your face every day before going outdoors. Even on cold cloudy days.

Make sure that the sunscreen you choose is rosacea friendly. Dermatologists recommend that you use a sunscreen that has zinc oxide or titanium dioxide as the main ingredient (or both), should be an SPF30 or higher and be fragrance free.

We recommend either the Alba Botanica Baby Mineral Sunscreen SPF45 or Eco Cosmetics Sun Spray SPF30 Sensitive

CHOOSE ROSACEA FRIENDLY SKINCARE

Many skincare products can irritate your skin and cause a rosacea flare up. To reduce the likelihood of buying something that is likely to cause your skin to flare up dermatologists recommend avoiding the following ingredients:

  • Alcohol
  • Fragrance
  • Sodium Laurel Sulfate or SLS (not found in any products on GreenerBeauty.com)

TEST SKINCARE & MAKEUP BEFORE APPLYING TO YOUR FACE

When trying a new product whether its skincare or makeup apply a small amount to your arm or behind your ear before you apply it to your full face. If it burns or causes any reaction do not continue using.

BE GENTLE WITH YOUR SKIN

Avoid using an exfoliant or anything that will be rough on your skin; yes this includes washcloths, flannels and facial sponges!
