Celebrating Inspirational Women

Today is International Women’s Day and to celebrate how many inspirational women we know and admire we have put together a list of our favourite women. Creating this list has led to some really lovely and inspirational chats here at Greener Beauty HQ so I hope you find the same.

There are so many Inspirational women out there and we have really struggled to get it down to our favourite 12. So in alphabetical order the women we find the most inspirational are.

Carrie Green

I first heard of Carrie Green when it was suggested to me that I read her book called ‘She Means Business’ At the time I had just started Greener Beauty and her words really resonated with me. Since then I have become a member of her business membership, the Female Entrepreneurs Association, where she continues to inspire me every day.

Emmeline Pankhurst

I often feel grateful for all the women that have come before me and fought for women’s rights. The world would undoubtedly be a different world without the sacrifices they made. In the UK Emmeline Pankhurst was a big player as a women’s rights political activist and founder of the Suffragette movement which helped win women the right to vote.

Erin Gruwell

Erin Gruwell is an American Teacher who went to teach a class of kids in Los Angeles, California just after the Los Angeles riots in 1994. The kids she taught were the poor kids, the kids in gangs. The ones destined for a life of poverty going in and out of jail, that’s if they weren’t killed in gang warfare before they got that far. A class that the school refused to buy books for because it was believed that they would never read them or learn.

Thanks to Erin 150 students graduated from high school, many of whom were the first in their family to do so and many of them went on to collage which is such a huge achievement. Her students went on to write a collective book about their lives called Freedom Writers which became an American best seller.

Erin had such an incredible positive impact on these students that it really inspires me that we as everyday people in ‘normal’ jobs can make such a huge difference in the world.

Erin’s story is the basis of the film Freedom Writers staring Hillary Swank. This film is how I first came across Erin and it had and continues to have such a big impact on me as a reminder that we can all change the world.

Lisa Nichols

Do you know Lisa Nichols?

She is by far one of my favourite motivational speakers. From a struggling single mum to be being a millionaire entrepreneur that has changed the lives of so many people around the world, me included.

If you fancy a dose of uplifting positivity I highly recommend that you follow her on Instagram.

Laverne Cox

Laverne Cox is a trailblazer for the Transgender and LGBT Community.

I can’t even imagine what its like to be in a body that doesn’t feel like its mine. But this hasn’t stopped Laverne! Since going through her journey she has become the first Transgender woman to appear on the cover of Cosmopolitan and Time magazine, the first Transgender person to play a transgender person on a TV series.

Laverne has won multiple awards and is most well known for her prominent role in Orange is the New Black.

From living a life that doesn’t feel right to living a life that inspires, I think we can all take inspiration from Laverne.

Maya Angelo

If you follow Greener Beauty on social media you might not be surprised to see that Maya Angelo is on our top 12 list as we frequently share her inspirational quotes.

An American poet and civil rights activist campaigning for for the rights of black people and women.

I think we can all be a bit more Maya

“My mission in life is not merely to survive, but to thrive; and to do so with some passion, some compassion, some humour and some style.”

Michelle Obama

If you have ever watched ‘Becoming’ on Netflix you will know exactly why Michelle is on this list. She has used her position of power, during and after her husbands presidency to do good not just in the USA but around the world.

Oprah Winfrey

Like a lot of people here at Greener Beauty HQ we love a story about someone who has fought all the odds to be where they are. And for us Oprah Winfrey is a perfect example of this. With a hard childhood and an equally tough start to her career where she was turned down for job after job, we love how with a lot of determination and willpower she got to where she is now. And now she inspires millions of people all over the world including us!

Rosa Parks

Rosa Parks is an incredibly brave woman who stood up for what is right. I am sure you know the story of how she refused to give up her seat on a bus in 1955 for a Caucasian woman and was a result was arrested.

She was a very prominent figure in the civil rights movement and I am sure the world would not be the same without her risks.

While there is still some way to go for true equality and lots of work still to be done, I am sure you can all agree that a woman standing up for what is right against the establishment is not only inspirational but totally admirable.

Sara Blakley

Have you heard of Spanx? This is the brain child of Sara Blakley.

As a women with who has gone through her fair share of trauma (she witnessed her best friend being killed on a bike when she was a young teenager) she has created an empire with her business focus with a spiritual edge.

I have listened to Sara being interviewed a number of times. How she played such a major part in getting her business of the ground that included travelling all over the states to every store selling Spanx and helping to push sales from the ground up.

She was recently got a lot of press as she celebrated a billion dollar deal by giving all her employees a first class return ticket to anywhere in the world and $10,000 spending money to cover the holiday cost. She has also donated lots of money to charities and used her wealth for good.

Now that is the kind of company owner that I aspire to be!

Sylvia Earle

This would not be a Greener Beauty list of inspirational women without including the incredible Sylvia Earle.

Sylvia is an American Marine Biologist, conservationist, oceanographer, explorer, explorer and  lecturer who campaigns tirelessly to save the oceans.

My mum & Sisters

Sometimes we don’t have to look very far for inspirational women and this is certainly true of this fabulous group of women, the last in our list of inspirational women.

My mum was a professional ballerina, born in Australia she travelled the world to fulfil her dream living all over Europe before eventually living in the UK and marrying my dad. Travelling the world as a woman on her own might not be unusual now but back in the 50s it must have taken some fierce bravery!

And to all 3 of my sisters who are all totally different to one another and are all inspirational in their own way. They all continue to inspire me everyday.
