AVOCADO OIL IN SKINCARE

I am sure I am not the only one here who absolutely LOVES avocados. Smashed on toast. Made into guac. Hell, I have even been known to fold them into pasta and have them warm. As vegans I am sure we all have lots of avocados in our diet but what about in our skincare? Lots of natural skincare products are made with this incredible oil but what are the benefits to the skin? Here we will cover what these are and which skin types can especially benefit from this incredible oil.

HOW IS IT MADE?

It may not take a genius to guess, avocado oil is indeed made from avocados. The actual process to turn the fruit into an oil is that the skin and stone are removed. The flesh is then mechanically ground to a paste and then goes through a process of being malaxed (or slowly churned) for between 40 and 60 minutes at a temperature of between 45°C and 50°C. Even though it is put through heat it is still considered a cold pressed extraction method similar to olive oil. The oil and water in the paste are then separated and we have Avocado oil.

BENEFITS OF AVOCADO OIL

When applied to the skin there are many benefits of this gorgeous oil, these include:

MOISTURISES & HEALS YOUR SKIN

Containing a high percentage of Vitamin E as well as potassium and lecithin amongst others, these components can nourish and moisturise your skin.

There is also oleic acid in avocado oil which promotes collagen production, helping your skin heal itself, more on that shortly…

RELIEVES INFLAMMATION

The antioxidants and vitamins that are found in avocado oil help to heal any dry, irritated and flaky skin that may be associated with eczema, psoriasis or other skin conditions.

If you have sensitive skin I would always recommend doing a patch test before starting a new regime, even with natural products!

ACNE PRONE SKIN

Similar to the skin conditions listed above, avocado oil can also work wonders for acne prone skin. This is partly because the avocado oil has the above mentioned antioxidants that help to relieve inflammation but also because this oil will not clog your glands and pores. This seed oil also has fungicidal and antibacterial properties which can be of huge benefit for acne prone skin.

REDUCES THE SIGNS OF AGEING

The fatty acids found in avocado oil helps to increase the skins elasticity which in turn slows down the formation of wrinkles. There have been studies done on this benefit and this is also gained through consuming avos.

ACCELERATES HEALING

A study that was done in 2013 found that the essential fatty acids and the oleic acid found in avocados promote collagen synthesis which is the regenerative process carried out by your skin to create new connective tissue. And as mentioned above this oil also helps to reduce inflammation.

TREATS SUNBURNT SKIN

Studies have also been carried out on the benefits of avocado oil helping to ease the symptoms of sunburn. The vitamin E, beta carotene, vitamin D, protein, lecithin, and essential fatty acids in the oil can support healing while also soothing the skin. It is also thought that avocado oil may help to protect the skin from harmful UV radiation.

IMPROVES SCALP HEALTH

Using hair products that contain avocado oil can help to reduce dandruff and other challenges that are caused by dry and flaky skin.

IMPROVES NAIL HEALTH

Using avocado oil on your nails and the surrounding skin will help to strengthen your nails and reduce breakage while keeping your skin soft and moisturised.
