Our sense of smell is intrinsically linked to our memory and one of the oldest and deepest parts of the brain. Estimated to be over 10,000 times more sensitive than our other senses like sight or sound, our sense of smell is a powerful tool to engage our brains, causing emotional and even physical responses which can enhance our state of wellbeing. But how does it work?
THE SCIENCE
Located at the top of the nose is the olfactory bulb, a part of the nervous system that captures the aroma you are smelling and carries the signal to a part of the brain called the limbic system. When we smell something, it bypasses our conscious brain, going straight to the limbic system. This area of the brain is responsible for producing and releasing our sensory experiences, such as memories, pleasure and instincts. More often than not, the body responds to the aroma before your brain has even recognised what it is.
Essential Oils are the natural aromatic compounds obtained from plants, fruits and trees, extracted from flowers, stalks, leaves, peel and petals. When we smell these in isolation, they can remind us of the plant or fruit from which they are extracted, which can be a pleasant experience in itself. Due to this amazing link with our limbic system, essential oils can do so much more than that, reminding us of an experience where we have come into contact with the aroma before, and subconsciously applyig an association with that aroma.
