An Interview with Fluffy Jim’s Founder Kelz

Kelz runs the vegan hair salon Pixal Rose and I first met her at London Vegfest about 3 and a half years ago. One of the things that first struck me about Kelz was her passion for hair dressing and veganism. In the world of hair dressing this is not a common combination. As soon as she contacted me to discuss the range of products she was working on I knew straight away that I would love to test and then sell her range. If you have tried any of her products you will know how effective and enjoyable to use they are!

So it gives me great pleasure to introduce her on this weeks blog, an Interview with Fluffy Jim’s Founder Kelz.

Enjoy!

TELL US ABOUT HOW YOU STARTED FLUFFY JIM’S

I started Fluffy Jim’s one day in my head whilst I was also studying for my qualification in hairdressing. There really wasn’t a lot of information around back then on how to start a cosmetic company (as there can be a lot of red tape) so first and foremost was working out exactly what the formalities were and if I could afford it. The company started with just one product which is the hair mud, because as a vegan hairdresser, I found it most difficult to find hair styling for gents which didn’t contain beeswax. It’s snowballed from there really as my knowledge and confidence for designing products has really grown and during the lockdowns especially, it’s given me an amazing output for my creativity whilst I can’t do any hair.

WHAT DOES AN AVERAGE DAY RUNNING FLUFFY JIM’S LOOK LIKE?

As you can imagine, each day is varied. At the moment, we’re getting closer and closer to the re-launch of Fluffy Jim’s with a whole load of new products coming out (and I’m not working in the salon) so each day is a flurry of excitement. I try to split my days into either ‘admin’ or ‘creating’

A typical Admin day will be replying to e-mails, working on the website, creating video content and updating socials (that’s the fun stuff). There’s also more serious tasks such making sure my insurances are up to date and that the products are on the government website but it’s all in a days work.

The creative days will either be making up stock to sell, or working on formulas for new products. Those days are very messy and very fun.

WHAT MAKES FLUFFY JIM’S HAIRCARE UNIQUE?

Number one, Fluffy Jim’s Hair Care is named after a guinea pig I used to have called Jimmy. He had a massive main of hair which everyone commented on. I don’t know of any other company named after a guinea pig! Secondly we’re not afraid to shout about the fact we’re a vegan company. We’re vegan founded, meaning we are vegan owned and run (by me) and to us, being vegan isn’t a ‘bonus’ trait, it’s the heart of our values.

Being eco and sustainable is also important but when I went vegan, it was for the animals and I’m not afraid to say it. It’s also why Fluffy Jim’s Hair Care has committed to donate 5% of profits to the Animal Justice Project so we can do our bit to help promote animal rights.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR DAILY BEAUTY ROUTINE

I don’t have a solid skin care regime, I like to use a micellar water in the evenings to remove make up and daily build up and I have a foaming face wash that I use in the shower each morning. My beauty mainly focuses on my hair and keeping it as healthy as possible. I don’t wash my hair everyday, perhaps twice a week instead, which is actually better for your scalp and your hair. I use my own products as they are naturally derived for the most part and also I know how they feel and work (and of course what’s in them) which means I can talk directly our customers about them with a great deal of knowledge.

I wash my hair with Fluffy Jim’s eco shampoo and conditioner but use Fluffy Jim’s dry shampoo on days where I either feel like my hair is sitting flat (as it’s great to give texture) or feels greasy. As my hair is bleached, it can get a little dry and fly away so i’ll use a drop of of the squeak squeak serum too. Ultimately though a good diet and lots of water is the best natural remedy for healthy, shiny hair!

WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR SPARE TIME?

SINGING! I’m in a theatre group and was in the middle of rehearsing my first principle role just before the pandemic hit but I love singing and going to the gym.

I also spend a lot of time with my dog. She’s my best friend.

IF YOU COULD VISIT ONE PLACE ON EARTH WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

I’d love to see more of the Caribbean and more of America. I love rum and pirate history and I was lucky enough to visit Jamaica in 2019 where we visited Port Royale (a famous pirate port – you hear them mention it in Pirates of the Caribbean) so I’d love to see more of what the other islands have to offer. The people are beautiful and lots of vegan food too!!

My other love is America. I’ve been to a few places but I’d love to go to New Orleans and experience the party atmosphere.

FAVOURITE FOOD?

Spaghetti Bolognaise (veganised) for breakfast, lunch and dinner please. Or maybe vegan sushi. Can I have both together?

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE THREE DREAM DINNER DATES WHO WOULD THEY BE?

Stan lee ( so we can talk super heroes)
Robert Downey Junior (Iron Man is my FAVE superhero)
Johnny Depp (but he’d have to come as Jack Sparrow)

WHAT ALWAYS BRINGS A SMILE TO YOUR FACE?

When I get up in the morning, walk into the dining room where my rescue guinea pigs are and I say ‘morning Pigs’ and they all start squeaking super loud and running around in circles because they know they’ll get veggies.

IF YOU WERE A SUPERHERO WHAT POWERS WOULD YOU HAVE?

Invisibility – that way I can break into animal testing labs and get all the animals out without being seen.

TELL ME ABOUT YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT?

I’ve been so lucky that my life has been full of amazing experiences so it’s hard to pin-point it to one but, I think opening the first vegan hair and beauty salon in my home town of Swindon (despite people thinking I was crazy) and keeping it going for over two years without anything too bad happening, is certainly up there!!!

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR FLUFFY JIM’S HAIR CARE?

I’d like to become a globally recognised brand and use that platform to highlight issues with animal rights. Oh… and make enough money to rescue more pets!!!! Yeah that too.
