An Interview with Bianca, Founder of Zero Waste Path

Before I introduce this lovely interview with Bianca, Founder of Zero Waste Path, just a little insight into how to get products listed on Greener Beauty. We get contacted by a LOT of brands who want to sell their products on Greener Beauty. We probably get contacted by about 20 to 30 brands each week. Some brands don’t even get to the testing stage if their ingredients aren’t clean enough or of course if they aren’t vegan or cruelty free or even if I don’t think the packaging is good enough. Anyway, Zero Waste Path were a brand that contacted me and as I was already aware of the brand (they were on my list of brands that I wanted to test & possibly stock) we entered into a conversation and they sent me some samples.

They sent me a selection of the soaps, one of deodorant tins, the bliss beauty oil  and a 2 in 1 shampoo/conditioner bar for my hair type. As you can imagine I have tried a LOT of shampoo bars. And as you might have noticed with my hair being blue it is bleached within an inch of its life before colouring. It needs a lot of nourishing and conditioning and this always makes me nervous with using a bar as sometimes they just aren’t hydrating enough or can easily strip out my colour. I need not have worried! This 2in1 bar is incredible, I cannot get over how much it foams (which for a natural product is incredible), its easy to rub in all over my hair, rinses well and leaves my hair so clean, soft, shiny and honestly just lush! I would even go so far to say that this is one of the best natural shampoos I have ever tried, not even just bars! So it was a complete no brainer that I get this fabulous brand in ASAP! The rest of the products we tested we all loved too and found them super effective, there wasn’t one product we didn’t love using!

So it gives me great pleasure to introduce this weeks blog, from our newest brand, and one that I am sure is going to be a Greener Beauty best seller. An Interview with Bianca, Founder of Zero Waste Path.

Enjoy!

TELL US ABOUT WHY YOU STARTED ZERO WASTE PATH

Giulio and I launched Zero Waste Path in 2018 while living in Edinburgh, this was 2 years after starting our own zero waste journey and while I was pursuing my MSc in Environmental Sustainability. We wanted to create a business that put as much effort into sustainability behind the scenes as it did in the final product, and above all a business that would be transparent on what happens behind the scenes. The business sector is a big source of waste and emissions, so we felt that more needed to be done to change business processes instead of just focusing on what is visible in the final product. Basically as zero wasters and then vegans ourselves we wanted to create our dream business and dream products!

WHAT MAKES ZERO WASTE PATH CO SO UNIQUE?

I think that the two main things that make us unique are our effort into being ethical and sustainable in all aspects of the business, from our break room furniture, to our supplies to the shipping labels we use, and our commitment to transparency. The truth is that the economy is still very much focused on linear products and maximising profit, which means that even as a manufacturing brand, sometimes it can be hard to find perfect solutions as there is still a lack of options and supplies. For this reason we believe that transparency is essential, we like to share a lot of behind the scenes, including the things that aren’t perfect!

WHAT DOES AN AVERAGE DAY RUNNING ZERO WASTE PATH LOOK LIKE?

We’re a small team, and we make all the products ourselves, so days can change a lot haha But generally we now start the day with a little team meeting led by the amazing Luana, and then we put some music on and we get started with the production for that day, labelling products and preparing orders! While some of the tasks can be a little repetitive at times, I am really grateful that our team is made up of amazing individuals, as it really helps to create a nice work environment, where we can also chat about life, values and things that are happening in the world, which is always very inspiring!

WHAT ZERO WASTE PATH PRODUCT MAKES YOU MOST PROUD?

I think definitely the 2in1 shampoo + conditioner line! I spent several months working on developing them, and we’ve had so much good feedback that sometimes I can’t even believe that I created them!! We had several customers (and stockists!) even saying that it was the best shampoo (solid or liquid) that they had ever used, which makes me incredibly proud and happy!

WHAT IS YOUR DAILY BEAUTY OR SKINCARE ROUTINE?

I do struggle a little bit to maintain a routine, so keeping things simple helps! I don’t use many products, just the Red Clay soap to wash my face in the morning and evening, the Bliss Beauty Oil to remove my make up and as a face moisturiser, a reusable face wipe and that’s it! In regards to make-up I use a variety of natural and vegan brands, like Inika and Zao, and I always ensure to use SPF!

ITEM OF MAKEUP OR SKINCARE THAT YOU COULDN’T LIVE WITHOUT

This is tough! I love using eyeliner, but maybe I would say lipstick! I love using lipstick, even with no other makeup on, and I often use it also as blush and eyeshadow too!

If instead I had to pick a skincare item it would definitely be the Bliss Beauty Oil, it lasts forever and it’s definitely one of the products I use the most!

FAVOURITE FOOD?

Pasta, it’s stereotypical because I’m Italian, but it’s true haha Oh and cherry tomatoes, on pretty much everything!

IF YOU COULD CHOOSE THREE DREAM DINNER DATES WHO WOULD THEY BE?

I would like to say something very smart, but it is mostly my crushes (even though they are all inspiring activists too!).

I probably would say a dinner with Emma Watson, one with Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel (does it count as just one?:D), who all used their platforms and fame to raise awareness on social justice causes such as racism, queerphobia, sexism and misogyny, even when it was “uncomfortable”. And one with Ruby Rose, who in addition to being vegan, had a big impact on my bi-awakening!

IF YOU COULD VISIT ANYWHERE ON EARTH WHERE WOULD YOU GO?

One of my dreams is to drive across all of Chile with our campervan Seb, hopefully one day we’ll be able to make it a reality!

WHAT SONG DO YOU LISTEN TO THAT ALWAYS CHEERS YOU UP?

Probably “I’m with you” by the absolute idol that is Avril Lavigne! I had recorded it from the CD on my old Nokia phone so that I could have it as a ringtone from like age 11 to age 16-17 haha

WHAT ALWAYS BRINGS A SMILE TO YOUR FACE

Our dogs Ettore and Nora! They are both so incredibly caring and sweet, and as someone that struggles with mental health, their love and cuddles can brighten my day and put a smile on my face in pretty much any situation!

IF YOU WERE A SUPERHERO WHAT POWERS WOULD YOU HAVE?

I’ve always dreamt of flying, so definitely being able to fly would be very cool!! But I mean I wouldn’t mind being a mermaid too since I love being in the water more than anything else, but I’m not sure it counts as a superhero/power haha

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PROUDEST ACHIEVEMENT

Definitely the business, we started ZWP in our kitchen with £200, and it’s still surreal at times to see what we have managed to create on our own. Both Giulio and I are very proud of how hard we worked and everything we have built. It wasn’t easy and we did give up a lot, especially in the beginning, but we’re very proud of what we’ve been able to achieve and of all the waste we have prevented by creating ethical, sustainable products that help people live low waste in an easy way, and without giving up on quality!

WHAT ARE YOUR GOALS FOR ZERO WASTE PATH?

Our dreams in the future would be to expand our range of products, to one day own our own workshop so that we can install solar panels and become independent with our energy supply, and to eventually manage to move to a 4 day week, which we think would be a much more balanced life for everyone!
