8 foods to eat for gorgeous, glowing skin

A Guest blog by Star Khechara of The FaceLift Diet

Luckily for vegans it’s easier to feed the skin from within because all the best beauty foods are plants: fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds and herbs…and even chocolate…are all amazing skin-foods rich in anti-ageing phytochemicals such as Lycopene, Anthocyanins, Polyphenols, Catechins and Ellagic acid.

Beauty isn’t just skin deep. Beauty is the visible outer symptom of glowing inner health at the cellar level. Age is an inside job, so is beautiful skin. All those gorgeous organic lotions and potions can only go so far, food is where the real magic happens – you’re literally building, repairing and feeding your skin with every bite you eat.  Choose beauty foods and your skin will love you for it.

8 SIMPLE BEAUTY FOODS TO ADD TO YOUR DIET TODAY

  1. Raspberries: these velvety summer treats are rich in Ellagic acid which is proven to prevent long term damage and ageing due to sun exposure.
  2. Cucumber: rich in the mineral silica for healthy teeth, hair and nails.
  3. Red cabbage: high in TWO beauty compounds – sulphur which is known as ‘the beauty mineral’ and is essential for healthy hair (did you know each hair strand is 5% sulphur) and Anthocyanins – a family of blue-pigmented polyphenol with powerful anti-ageing properties thanks to it’s abilities as an anti-inflammatory and antioxidant.
  4. Avocado: this fatty fruit contains Vitamin E for soft silky skin and the carotenoids: Lutein & Zeaxanthin which are protective against ageing conditions of the eye and vision.
  5. CHOCOLATE! High quality dark chocolate, raw vegan chocolate and cacao powder all contain anti-ageing, antioxidant flavanols
  6. Oranges: these juicy citrus fruits are high in vitamin C which is essential for collagen production. They’re also high in bioavailable Calcium for healthy bones and teeth.
  7. Medjool dates: squishy fudge fresh dates are rich in Copper which is a mineral essential for maintaining the pigment in hair, a lack of copper is associated with greying hair and wrinkles.
  8. Watermelon: this hydrating summer favourite is rich in bioavailable Lycopene – a phytochemical proven to prevent and repair oxidative damage in the skin caused by the sun.

2 DELICIOUS ANTI-AGEING SKIN BEAUTIFYING RECIPES TO TRY

CHOCOLATE AVOCADO MOUSSE

Serves two

This silky smooth decadent pudding has a secret ingredient: avocado! Trust me it tastes a lot better than it sounds. This dessert is a great way to feed your skin with Vitamin E and Chlorophyll (from the avocado) plus those anti-ageing, antioxidant polyphenols in Cacao.

Ingredients:

1 ripe Hass avocado

3-4 squishy fresh Medjool dates (not the dried dates in packets)

1 tablespoon of raw cacao powder

1 tablespoon of Almond milk

A dash of Vanilla essence

A pinch of Himalayan Pink Salt

(Optional – a dash of natural chocolate essence)

How to:

Remove the flesh from the avocado, discarding the skin and central pit.

Remove the stone and the ‘stone cap’ from the dates

Add all the ingredients to a food processor and blend until smooth.

Adjust the texture by adding more almond milk if it’s too thick.

Place in fridge for a couple of hours if you want it cool then decorate with cacao nibs, chopped nuts and rose petals etc

RASPBERRY ORANGE SMOOTHIE

Serves two as a drinkable meal

This tangy breakfast smoothie is a powerful injection of anti-ageing nutrients that’s better than Botox! Serious words, I know. The high amounts of vitamin C in the oranges is essential for collagen production within the skin and the Ellagic acid in raspberries protects against (and reverses) skin damage and ageing caused by the sun. Oranges are also rich in bioavailable calcium for healthy bones and teeth.

Ingredients:

Freshly pressed juice from approximately 6 large juicy oranges

350g of frozen or fresh raspberries

5 fresh squishy Medjool dates (M&S sell really good ones)

How to:

Using a citrus juicer extract the juice from the oranges then blend with the raspberries and dates in a good quality blender (sadly, very cheap blenders might not cope with the toughness of the dates).

Pour into glass and drink, You can also pour into glass bottles with lids and  store in the fridge for unto 3 days

I’ve tried Star’s Chocolate Avocado Mousse before and it’s rich and delicious. Try it also with a layer of coconut cream on top. But be warned, it is very rich!
